Portable lamps

My role in the project:

  • Photography

  • Retouch

  • Copywriting

  • Concept planning team

In the release of a new category of lamps that were portable and battery-driven, we realized in our two-man content team that we would need inspiring images to highlight the possibilities on our channels.

With no budget for hiring an external photographer or external location, I took on the role as photographer/retoucher and shot these campaign images.

Process

Context / Brief

Create a set of images that emphasize the possibilities of portable lamps. The image style should capture a soft and warm aesthetic still that aligns with the Scandinavian vibe of the brand. Images should not be too busy and leave enough space for text and additional graphics.

Challenge / Insight

The uniqueness of these lamps is the fact that they're not limited to cords or chargers. With no budget to shoot at external locations or to build new settings in our studio we decided that my colleagues home was enough on brand for the assignment. The biggest challenge was to allow the lamps to show off a soft light so the setting shouldn't be too dark to differ from our previous image style.

Idea / Concept

To highlight the possibilities we decided to place them on the middle of a sofa table, dining table and take "in action" images when placing the lamp in the scenes. The pros of in-action shots using hands were many, emphasizing portability while also showing off the size.

Outcome

The most challenging part was to shoot with natural lighting and keep a consistency in color and lighting for the campaign.

This project made me even more driven to learn about natural lighting, color grading and retouch. With a very limited time frame (two working days to prep/shoot and retouch) to delivery we had to agree on a level that was good enough to publish, here's a selection of campaign images used on all our channels and also by retailers.
